​Bolívar demanded for Gran Colombia the return of Tumbes, Jaén and Maynas, in Peruvian possession.

​From a letter from Bolívar himself to Francisco de Paula Santander, dated August 3, 1822, it appears that the Liberator recognized that both Jaén and Maynas legitimately belonged to Peru.

The Battle of Tarqui, took place on this day in 1829 at Portete de Tarqui, near Cuenca, Ecuador. It was fought between troops from Gran Colombia, commanded by Antonio José de Sucre, and Peruvian troops under José de La Mar. It was a victory for Gran Colombia .

​After winning independence from Spain, the countries that are now Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela formed a single nation known as Gran Colombia.

​The southerndepartments remained part of Gran Colombia until its break-up in 1830, when they emerged as the independent Republic of Ecuador.

A battle broke out between the Ecuadorian army led by Juan José Flores and the New Granadan army, commanded by José María Obando. On December 8, 1832, the Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Alliance between New Granada and Ecuador was signed in the city of Pasto.​
