The Dodo​

Near the end of the 16th century, Dutch sailors landed on the island of Mauritius. They found several species of birds and animals that they had never seen before. Perhaps the most famous of these creatures is the dodo - most famous because it was driven to extinction and now remembered in the saying 'as dead as a dodo'.

It was thought for a long time that humans hunted the dodo for food - and hunted it to extinction. However, the rubbish pits used by those early settlers in Mauritius were excavated in 2013
