When do we use the conditional tense?

**We use the Conditional Tense a lot! It is necessary to become familiar with it!

We call it the "Conditional Tense" because "Condition A" must happen BEFORE

"Action B" can happen.

Example 1

If you practice piano, you will get better at playing it.​

Let's look at some different forms of the Conditional Tense...

Conditional Tense 1

If + simple present, simple future.

If "Condition A" happens, "Action B" will happen. ​

Examples: ​

• If you practice piano, you will get better at playing it.

• If you ​do not hurry, you will miss the train.

• ​You will not do well on the exam if you sleep in class.

​--> We use this form when we want to talk about the present  or future when Condition A is true, and Action B is the likely/probable result.

Conditional Tense 2

​If "Condition A" happened,

"Action B" would/could happen. ​

• If more men took paternity leave, they could help take care of their children.

• If I spoke Italian, I could be working in Italy.

• I would study for the exam if I were you.

​--> We use this form when we want to talk about a hypothetical (架空) situation. What COULD/WOULD happen if it were true?
