1. Tell and Say

We use ‘tell’ when we want to focus more on the content or the message of what someone said.

We use ‘say’ when we focus on the words someone said.

1. Tell and Say

‘Hello,’ she said.

Not: ‘Hello,’ she told.

She told him they were going on holiday. (The focus is on the information.)

We use say with direct speech. We don’t normally use tell in this way:

He said, ‘I’m not paying £50 for that.’

Meanwhile, ‘sit’ is an intransitive verb that refers to the act of bending your knees and placing your bottoms or hips on a chair or any other object. ‘Sit’, an intransitive verb, does not require an object. To sit is to take a seat, so you sit down when someone asks you to take a seat.
