1. Tell and Say
We use ‘tell’ when we want to focus more on the content or the message of what someone said.
We use ‘say’ when we focus on the words someone said.

‘Hello,’ she said.
Not: ‘Hello,’ she told.
She told him they were going on holiday. (The focus is on the information.)
We use say with direct speech. We don’t normally use tell in this way:
He said, ‘I’m not paying £50 for that.’

4. ‘Raise’ and ‘Rise’
The following pairs of verbs can be confusing because it has the same definition. The verb ‘raise’ and ‘rise’ both refer to something going up.

6. Set and Sit
‘Set’ is a transitive verb that is used to refer to an act of placing an object or objects in place in or upon a surface. The verb ‘set’ is always used whenever you are talking about a thing or an object. You can set a book on the shelf or a pillow on the bed.
Meanwhile, ‘sit’ is an intransitive verb that refers to the act of bending your knees and placing your bottoms or hips on a chair or any other object. ‘Sit’, an intransitive verb, does not require an object. To sit is to take a seat, so you sit down when someone asks you to take a seat.
