Use

Past Simple - Use

​We use the past tense to talk about:

• something that happened once in the past:

We visited our grandparents last year.

• something that happened several times in the past:

When I was a child, I played outside all day long, I enjoyed spending time with my friends.​

• we often use expressions with ago with the past simple:

I bought my car a long time ago.

Use

Past Simple -Use

We can divide the verbs into:

​

​regular verbs (play, visit, dance, travel, create)

• irregular verbs (drink, eat, sing, swim, write)​

Affirmative form:

Past Simple - Affirmative form

​Regular verbs (add	​Irregular verbs (use the
​I played	​I ate
You played​	​You ate
​He/she/it played	He/she/it ate​
​We played	We ate​
You played​	You ate​
They played​	They ate​

Negative form:

Past Simple - Negative form

​Use DID NOT (DIDN`T) before the verb in the negative sentence:

I didn`t play football yesterday.

She didn`t eat pizza last night.​

​

*Remember to have the verb in the SHORT INFINITIVE form when using the negative.​

Interrogative form:

Past simple - Interrogative form

If you want to ask questions, use DID before the subject.

DID you play football yesterday?

DID she eat pizza last night?

​

You can also give short answers:

Did you play football yesterday? ​ Yes, I did.

Did she eat pizza last night? ​ No, she didn`t.
