What is energy? What makes you say that? (Use your own words to describe it.)

Energy is another word for power. Energy makes things move. It makes machines work. Energy also makes living things grow.

Energy exists in many different forms. Animals get energy from eating food. Electrical energy is associated with the tiny units called atoms that make up everything in the universe. Heat and light are also forms of energy. One form of energy can also be transferred into another. In a lightbulb electric energy changes to light and heat.​

Why do people use energy? What do YOU use it for?

​We use energy to heat and cool our homes, schools, and businesses. We use energy for lights and appliances. Energy makes our vehicles go, planes fly, boats sail, and machines run.

All living things need energy too. Plants use the light from the sun to grow. Animals and people eat the plants and use the energy that was stored. Food is fuel for our bodies' energy needs like muscle power.

​We also use our own bodies to make heat energy. When you have been running or working really hard, your body produces heat energy.

Basically, Bahia produces 4 kinds of energy: 

thermo electric, hydroelectric, solar and wind energy.​

Did you know that Bahia is a leading state in the production of wind and solar energy?

And along with hydroelectric power, they are considered renewable, as they have a cycle and are always available for use. However,  hydropower also contributes to the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4), two gases that potentiate the effects of global warming.

​Moreover, we still have thermal power plant in operation using oil and gas (fossil fuels).

Why think about energy? Can it be harmful in some way?

It is important to discuss energy sources as well as the advantages and disadvantages in each kind. Because understanding this concept is essential so that we can think of sustainable measures in relation to the use of these resources and make us think about our own future and how we are going to deal with it.

​All energy sources have some impact on our environment. Fossil fuels—coal, oil, and natural gas—do much more harm than renewable energy sources by most measures, including air and water pollution, damage to public health, wildlife and habitat loss, water use, land use, and global warming emissions.
