2

What is Linking?

Linking exists to sound more fluent and smooth in english pronunciation (RP).

Linking is a way of joining two words in their pronunciation so they sound smoothly.

3

There are two types of Linking:

  • Linking /r/

  • Intrusive /r/

4

Linking /r/:

In RP we don't normally pronounce the ending /r/ sound of a word if it's followed by a consonant sound: The car won't start /ðə kɑː wəʊnt stɑːt/

But when it's followed by a vowel sound, we do pronounce it in order to sound more fluent, for example: The car is mine /ðə kɑːr ɪz maɪn/

Some text here about the topic of discussion

5

Intrusive /r/

Unlike the case of Linking /r/, Intrusive /r/ appears between two vowels sounds, it means, when a word that ends in a vowel sound it is followed by a word starting with a vowel sound, we pronounce an /r/ sound that has never existed there, for example: Area of agreement /ˈeərɪər ɒv əˈgriːmənt/

Let's practice this
