HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL
HAZARDS
Definition
A process or phenomenon of atmospheric, hydrological or oceanographic nature that may cause loss of life, injury or other health impacts, property damage, loss of livelihoods and services, social and economic disruption, or environmental damage

Typhoon
Local term for tropical cyclone—tropical cyclones formed on the Western North Pacific Ocean are called typhoon.
Strength is determined by the speed of the maximum sustained winds near the center (30 KPH o > 185KPH) (NDRC).
Typhoons can bring torrential rainfall, wind driven water, powerful and destructive waves and storm surges.

Hurricane – North Atlantic Ocean
Cyclone – Indian Ocean

• EYE -THIS IS THE CENTER. IT IS THE CALM PART OF THE STORM.
• EYE WALL -THIS PART IS AROUND THE EYE. THIS PART HAS THE STRONGEST WINDS AND RAINS. THE WINDS MAY BLOW 200 MILES PER HOUR.
• RAIN BANDS -THESE ARE THE CLOUDS THAT SPIN.

Floods
A flood occurs when there is an increase in water level from continuous or heavy rainfall, release of water from dams and overflowing of water systems.
DISASTER READINESS AND RISK REDUCTION | TERM 1 | SY 2022-2023
12
FLASHFLOOD - caused by heavy rains; appears quickly but disappears quickly as well.
DISASTER READINESS AND RISK REDUCTION | TERM 1 | SY 2022-2023
Type of Flood
13
RIVERINE - when the level of water flowing through rivers increases and goes beyond the average water level or worse.
DISASTER READINESS AND RISK REDUCTION | TERM 1 | SY 2022-2023
Type of Flood
14
ESTUARINE AND COASTAL - occur when seawater encroaches low lying land that is usually still above sea level. Flood in these areas can be a result of storm surges
DISASTER READINESS AND RISK REDUCTION | TERM 1 | SY 2022-2023
Type of Flood
15
URBAN FLOODING - a result of:
1) saturation of the ground due to too much rainfall and
2) the presence of large areas of impermeable surfaces like concrete pavements and rooftops.
DISASTER READINESS AND RISK REDUCTION | TERM 1 | SY 2022-2023
Type of Flood
16
CATASTROPHIC FLOODING - results from ground failure or major infrastructure failure (e.g., dams).
DISASTER READINESS AND RISK REDUCTION | TERM 1 | SY 2022-2023
Type of Flood
17
Storm surge
A storm surge is an abnormal rise of the ocean generated by a weather disturbance such as a typhoon, over and above the predicted high tide mark.
A tsunami is generated by an earthquake; unlike a storm surge which is generated by a typhoon.

Signs of impending Typhoons
The best way to know whether there is an impending typhoon is to check the weather news
If, for some reason, the news is not accessible, you may check for the following:
Presence of overcast
Rise in sea level with frequent waves
Check or use the barometer
DISASTER READINESS AND RISK REDUCTION | TERM 1 | SY 2022-2023
22
Check the presence of the following clouds
DISASTER READINESS AND RISK REDUCTION | TERM 1 | SY 2022-2023
Signs of impending Typhoon
Cirrus clouds
Cumulus clouds
Lenticular clouds
23
What we encounter from the news...
24
Ponder on the ff.:
Is it important to have proper understanding of and access to information regarding typhoons? Why?
In what other ways can we make information more understandable and accessible to the people?
25
26
Thunderstorms
Weather disturbance that produces thunder and lightning, aside from wind and rain.
Thunderstorms occur locally, often as episodes of cyclones, and, in common with squalls, are marked by abrupt variations in pressure, temperature, and wind.
DISASTER READINESS AND RISK REDUCTION | TERM 1 | SY 2022-2023
It is a storm of lightning and thunder usually with rain and gusty winds, sometimes with hail or snow, produced by cumulonimbus clouds.
Thunder is the rumbling sound that is heard during thunderstorms. It is caused by the fast expansion of gases in the electrical charge of lightning in a thunderstorm.
27
Signs of impending Thunderstorms
Presence of cumulonimbus clouds.
(cumulo – heap; nimbus – rain)
Accompanied by thunder and lightning.

EL NIÑO
El Niño is the warming of ocean surface in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean; this creates reduced rainfall over the regions of Indonesia and Philippines.

30
LA NIÑA
La Niña is the cooling of ocean surface in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean; this creates increased rainfall over the regions of Indonesia and Philippines.
