Analyzing the Rock and Fossil Record

• erosion (movement of sediment via gravity, wind, water)

• deposition (laying down sediment by wind, water, ice)

• weathering (wearing down of rocks)

• earth motion​ (plate movement, earthquake, volcanoes, etc)

a prinicple that state the geologic processes that occur today are similar to those that have occurred in the past

• this means we can student the present to learn about the past​

What is the basis for understanding Earth's past?

• the age of rocks and geologic features compared with other rocks and geologic features

• there are 5 principles (rules) to determine relative age​

• sometimes scientists use radioactive dating to determine​ actual age
