​In IELTS writing task 1,

you might be

presented a graph or

table without a trend.​

​Describing number - Quantities

A lot of: can be used with uncountable nouns informally and should be

avoided in formal writing.

​

The majority of the employees have university degrees.

​Words for describing quantity:​

​Amount / A great deal of: Uncountable​

​A great deal of imprisonment are recorded in the UK.

A great deal of effort has gone into making the software reliable.​

Many / Quantity : Countable​

​Quantity is only used for items that can

be measured or counted, not for abstract terms.

Eg: The quantity of prisoners locked in the US has increased dramatically overtime.​

Eg: The quantity of production

The amount of production increased in the last 20 years.​

• the figure for selling fiction books has risen sharply in the past 3 years.
