Describing number - Quantities
A lot of: can be used with uncountable nouns informally and should be
avoided in formal writing.
The majority of the employees have university degrees.

Words for describing quantity:
Amount / A great deal of: Uncountable
A great deal of imprisonment are recorded in the UK.
A great deal of effort has gone into making the software reliable.
Many / Quantity : Countable
Quantity is only used for items that can
be measured or counted, not for abstract terms.
Eg: The quantity of prisoners locked in the US has increased dramatically overtime.
Eg: The quantity of production
The amount of production increased in the last 20 years.
Figure: refer to the actually number
the figure for selling fiction books has risen sharply in the past 3 years.
