Classifying the Stars

2

Content goal (learning objective): KWBAT understand how stars are classified using the HR scale.

Before we begin our lesson, you will be asked some short response questions. It is okay to not know the answer. Try your best to answer using your background knowledge about stars.

Let's make observations before we begin reading. Flip through the pages, what do you notice?

7

As we read, let's focus on answering the following questions:

  1. What are the ways scientists categorize (classify) stars?

  2. What is the main way of classifying stars?

  3. If two stars have the same temperature,  does it also mean they have the same luminosity?

  1. What is one of the most important tools used to study stars?

  2. What is an HR diagram?

  3. Where do stars spend 90% of their lives according to the HR diagram?

8

Now that we have annotated together, we will practice using an HR diagram. You will need a pencil. Let's begin working on the Star Classification Lab, your teacher will model how to graph the stars in the table to begin classifying them.

9

Great work! Now let's complete our Exit Ticket
