How do we conjugate other verbs?

Excellent question! Lucky for you, this is what we'll work on for the second half of the class.

There are two kinds of verbs: regular and irregular. Today, we'll learn how to form the Past Simple with regular verbs.

  • We only use the conjugated form of the verb in affirmations. For questions and negations, we use the base form!

This took a long time to do, so you better pay attention!

3

We add -ed!
  • help - helped, ask - asked

When verbs end in -e, we only add -d.

  • care - cared, like - liked

When verbs end in consonant + y they drop the -y and we add -ied.

  • carry - carried, study - studied

BUT when verbs end in vowel + y they simply add -ed.

  • play - played

In occassions, when verbs end in a consonant we double that consonant and add -ed.

  • stop - stopped, hop - hopped, travel - travelled.
