Maggie read that some plants grow better if the soil is acidic. Maggie decides to test if the plants she has will grow better when acid (vinegar) is added to the soil. She puts potting soil in two planting containers and transplants two of her geraniums that seem about the same size into the pots. She puts the pots in the same location so that they both get the same sunlight each day, are at the same temperature and she makes sure they get the same amount of water. However, Maggie puts a tablespoon of vinegar in the water she gives to one of the plants. She measures the growth of the plants every week for five weeks and records the results.

  1. When we watched the videos of the burning marshmallow, chip, and oil, what was being measured?

The amount of energy being given off by burning food with different amount of carbohydrates, protein, and lipids.

Chemical energy in food transferred to light energy and thermal energy

In which organelle does this reaction take place?

1

nucleus

2

mitochondria

3

lysosome

4

ribosome

14

This is a chemical reaction because new compounds with different properties are formed.

6O2 + C6H12O6 --> 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP

15

12. Which food molecule will provide us with the MOST energy?

1

Carbohydrates

2

Proteins

Lipids (fats)

16

Multiple Choice

13. Which food molecule will provide us with the QUICKEST energy?

1

Carbohydrates

2

Proteins

3

Lipids (fats)

17

  1. Provide us with the QUICKEST form of energy because carbs (glucose) are small enough to get into the cells through the membrane without having to be broken down.

Carbohydrates

  1. Provide us with the MOST energy because fats have the greatest number of bonds to break.
