Most Maps will have a Compass Rose of some sort. It shows North South East and West.

These "in-between directions aren't vertical or horizontal, they're diagonal.

There are also "in-between" directions

like ​South-West,

North-East, South-East and North West

Roads that run East and West are even numbered

Roads that run North and South are odd numbered​

Even numbers end in 0,2,4,6,8 Odd numbers end in 1,3,5,7,9

In the U.S. most routes and highways are numbered.

Routes and Highways don't always follow the rules! There may be an odd numbered highway that runs East and West for a stretch, for example.
