• England wanted colonies like Spain

• 1st permanent settlement in Jamestown, Virginia (1607)

• England’s population was increasing (3 million - 5 million)

  • Jobs are hard to find because there’s so many people

• The new colonies were attractive for people who wanted new opportunities

  • Called the “New World”

  • Rich people in colonies paid for the tickets of poor people in England to come to the colonies

    • Indentured servants - worked for 5-7 years to pay back

• mainly families

• came in search of religious freedom
