   นานาภาษาอังกฤษกับจักรวรรดินิยมทางภาษา

• Linguistic Imperialism (Phillipson, 1997) แนวความคิดที่ว่า การแพร่กระจายของภาษาอังกฤษไปทั่วโลก ทำให้คนในท้องถิ่นเห็นคุณค่าความสำคัญของภาษาอังกฤษมากกว่าภาษาท้องถิ่นอื่น ๆ และหันมาใช้ภาษาอังกฤษอย่างกว้างขวาง เปรียบเสมือนตกเป็นอาณานิคมหรือเมืองขึ้นทางภาษา

​Linguistic Imperialism เกิดขึ้นจาก​

โครงสร้างและอุดมการณ์ (Ideology) ของสังคมของผู้ใช้ภาษาที่เอื้อทำให้ภาษาหนึ่งมีอำนาจหรือ สถานภาพ รวมถึงคุณค่าความสำคัญมากกว่าภาษาอื่น ๆ

• ภาษาสามารถเป็นสิ่งที่ทำให้เกิดความไม่เท่าเทียมกันในการเข้าถึงอำนาจในสังคม

• ภาษายังเป็นอำนาจในตัวเองและเป็นเครื่องมือในการถ่ายทอดอำนาจได้ด้วย

​World Englishes จึงเกี่ยวข้องกับ Linguistic Imperialism ในแง่มุมดังนี้​

1. Native speakers (เจ้าของภาษา) Vs. Non-native speakers (ไม่ใช่เจ้าของภาษา)

• เมื่อใช้ Kachru's concentric circles of Englishes หรือการแบ่งกลุ่มภาษาอังกฤษออกเป็น 3 กลุ่ม คือ Inner Circle Englishes, Outer Circle Englishes, และ Expanding circle of Englishes จึงเกิดการแบ่งชั้นของภาษาในแง่ของความเป็นเจ้าของภาษา หรือไม่ใช่เจ้าของภาษาขึ้นระหว่างภาษาอังกฤษแต่ละกลุ่ม และยังทำให้คุณค่า สถานภาพ ความสำคัญของภาษาอังกฤษในแต่ละ Variety ไม่เท่ากันอีกด้วย

Native Speakerism แนวคิดเกี่ยวกับความเป็นเจ้าของภาษา

แนวคิดนี้จัดว่าเป็น Neo-racist ideology หรืออุดมการณ์เหยียดเชื้อชาติใหม่ (Adrian Holliday, 2014)

1. แนวคิดนี้นำไปสู่การมองผู้ที่ใช้ภาษาหรือตัวภาษาที่ไม่เท่ากัน

2. นำไปสู่การแบ่งแยกผู้ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษเป็น Native speakers และ Non-native speakers ซึ่งมีบทบาท พร้อมทั้งคุณลักษณะหรือคุณสมบัติที่ไม่เท่ากัน

3. นำไปสู่การได้รับการปฏิบัติที่ไม่เท่าเทียมกันในสถานการณ์ต่าง ๆ ในสังคมระหว่าง Native speakers และ Non-native speakers

  ในสภาวะที่ภาษาอังกฤษกลายเป็นภาษากลางในการสื่อสารหรือภาษาของโลก
