Most stories have a beginning a middle and an end....
Some stories may begin in the middle of the action.
This type of opening is called in medias res. These openings are exciting and they engage the reader immediately. If "The Treasure of Lemon Brown" had started with Greg and Lemon hiding from the robbers, the opening would have been in medias res.
Structure of a story 2.1.2 page 4
5
Genre 2.1.2 pages 5 - 7
There are different types of stories. The type is based on the content of the story. Stories set in the future may be science fiction. Stories full of magic could be fantasy.

What is a Medium? 2.1.2 page 8
(the plural is media)
A story's medium is the form through which it is communicated.
Main categories are text, audio and video.
The physical form of a story could be print.
A medium can communicate any kind of information, not just a story. For example, there are news media and social media as well.

Compare and Contrast 2.1.5 page 3
When you compare and contrast, you examine the similarities and differences between two or more things. In this case, you'll examine stories.

Review genre and medium 2.1.5 page 4

Plot Structures 2.1.5 page 7
Most stories follow a linear plot, where one event follows another.
You've seen how authors might put more focus on one stage of plot than another. For example, "The Apple-Tree" by Katherine Mansfield blazes through the falling action and resolution in one sentence, while "The Treasure of Lemon Brown" spends a lot of time on the falling action and resolution.
15
Non-linear plot structures 2.1.5 page 9
Sometimes a story will use the stages of plot out of order. For example, Edgar Allan Poe's "The Black Cat" uses an in medias res opening. At the beginning, the narrator is condemned to die, but readers don't know why. This opening makes readers want to find out what happened. The plot diagram shows what this kind of plot looks like. Look it over, then complete question 5 in your practice guide.
16
Open Ended
You're reading along in an interesting story. You encounter a flashback. Is the plot linear or non linear? Why?
17
2.1.5 Practice
For this assignment, you'll compare and contrast the story you read earlier, "The Treasure of Lemon Brown" by Walter Dean Myers, with a story of your choice.
The story you choose can be in any medium or genre — another realistic short story, a fantasy podcast, a science fiction movie, a TV show, or even a video game. Just pick something you're excited about. Whatever you choose, you'll write about how each story's genre, medium, and structure are similar and different.
Don't forget to check the Rubric!!!! Let's look at the assignment and rubric.
