Becoming an Olympic city
OLYMPIC CITY SELECTION The Olympic Games give international athletes the chance to compete against each other in over 380 sporting events. Recent Olympics have allowed for participation by more nations and athletes in more sports than ever before. The summer and winter Olympic Games occur every four years. However, getting ready for the Games is a full-time job for both the athletes and the planners.
The International Olympic Com-mittee (IOC), which organizes every aspect of the Olympic games, is made Up of officials from several nations, One of the committee's most impor-tant duties is to select theitities where the Olympics will be held. A large city with plenty of room for growth and development is the model for a perfect Olympic host city.
The process of being chosen as 4 host city is lengthy and difficult. One: of the first steps is for city officials to complete a detailed application, The purpose of the application is to show the IOC that the city is prepared to support a large, international event. For example, one portion of the ap. plication asks about
the city's popuistion. The IOC needs to know how the num-ber of people already living in a city will affect its ability to provide accommoda-tions, such as hotels and restaurants, for
international visitors. The application also requires :a plan for how the city will keep up with all the preparation requirements. Another portion of the application concerns industries in the city and the region around it. This in-formation can indicate how strong the local economy is and if there are any problems with air and water quality. This kind of information could per-suade the committee to choose one city over another. If a city's application is approved by the IOC. the next Step is for the committee members to inspect the
candidate city in person. They attend a briefing by city officials, who pres-ent their plan for hosting the Games. Important points in-
Past Summer Olymple Games year host city events nations 1896. Athens 43 14 1908 London 110 1932 Los Angeles 117 37 1968 Mexito city 172 112 1988 Seoul 237 159 2004 Athens 301 201
elude the amount of time and money the city can contribute to the event. After the IOC visits all the candidate cities, the members choose the future host city of the Olympic Games.
