Climate

  • the rainy season is experienced from June to November

  • hot climate is experienced from February to May.

  • rotation of the earth around the sun also affects the climate experienced by a place or country

6

The Philippines is north of equator. The equator is the imaginary line on the globe that divides north and south. It is at 0 °.

Some text here about the topic of discussion.

7

Tropical or Low Latitude Zone - the zone closest to the equator and experiences the hottest climate because it is directly exposed to the sun. There are only two types of climate here, the rainy (wet) and the dry (summer) seasons. The Philippines is in this zone, so it has a tropical climate.

Climate Zones of the World

media

8

Temperate Zone - in this zone, the countries have four types of climate, namely: spring, autumn, summer, and winter because the sunlight they receive is diagonal. Countries between 23.5° North latitude and 66.5° North latitude or between the Tropic of Cancer and the Arctic Circle in the North and areas between 23.5° East longitude and 66.5° East longitude or between the Tropic of Cancer Capricorn and the Antarctic Circle in the North.

9

Polar Zone - this is the coldest part of the world. Winter or frost throughout the year is experienced in these areas. It is at 66.5° North latitude to 90° North latitude or between the Arctic Circle and the North Pole and 66.5° North latitude to 90° North latitude or between the Antarctic Circle and the South Pole.

Factors affecting Climate and Weather

Latitude

Areas or countries near the equator experience hot weather because these places are directly exposed to the sun. These areas experience two types of climate, dry and wet seasons.

17

Factors affecting Climate and Weather

Altitude

  • High places such as mountains and mountain ranges have cold climate. The air is thinner or has less oxygen so it carries less heat.

  • As the area rises, the climate here becomes colder.

  • In the Philippines, Ifugao, Kalinga, Apayao, and Baguio City are in the highlands so the climate is cold here.

  • The height of the area affects the temperature of a place. The climate varies based on the height of the area.

media

18

Factors affecting Climate and Weather

Temperature

  • refers to the heat and cold of an object or place

  • temperature of an area is based on the height or bottom of its location, rainfall, and wind

  • low or cold temperatures in high areas and warmer temperatures in low areas or at sea level.

19

Types of Winds

Trade Winds

  • low from northeast or east after crossing the Pacific Ocean

  • experienced in the Philippines in the months of February and March

The wind blows in the different directions in the different parts of the world. These winds also affect the country’s climate.

20

Types of Winds

Monsoon Winds

  • winds experienced in Asia that change direction

    • northeast monsoon (Amihan )comes from the northeast, also called cool breeze.

    • comes from China and Siberia

    • experienced every November to February

    • cool and dry air

    • wind drives the successive arrival of waves and tsunamis in the oceans

The wind blows in the different directions in the different parts of the world. These winds also affect the country’s climate.

21

Types of Winds

Monsoon Winds

  • winds experienced in Asia that change direction

    • southwest monsoon (Habagat) comes from Indian Ocean which hits the southwestern part of the Philippines

    • experienced from May to October

    • brings rain to the country

The wind blows in the different directions in the different parts of the world. These winds also affect the country’s climate.

22

El Niño and La Niña

El Niño - The warming of the waters of the Pacific Ocean is caused by El Niño. It brings a long dry season.

La Niña - the cooling of water in some parts of the Pacific Ocean. It causes widespread flooding.

23

Global Warming

  • the change in climate or weather in different parts of the world due to the increase in greenhouse gases that warm the world from factories, power generation, and vehicles that use gasoline.

  • causes disasters like heatwaves, floods, and droughts, which can lead to illness or death

  • Diseases such as dengue fever, diarrhea, malnutrition, and others will become more prevalent as global temperatures rise.

Climate in the Philippines

The Philippines experience two (2) types of weather, sunny and

rainy because of its location in the world. The sun shines directly on it.

However, the Philippines experience different climates or seasons in

 different places.

39

Type I - Two pronounced seasons, dry from November to April and wet

throughout the year. From June to September are the months with

maximum rain period.
