§2. Find words in the sentence that you know or familiar

Nah, ini seperti biasanya, kita cari yang kita kenal dari rombongan kata dalam kalimat yang ditanyakan. Hehe.. Siapa tau bisa lebih kenal dekat dengan lainnya, ya nggak?

§3. Make sure you know what the text mostly tells about.

Minimal tau topiknya, kemudian cari kata-kata bernada positif atau negatif, sehingga meraba-raba, oh ini penulisnya setuju dengan topik, oh ini penjabaran, oh ini bertentangan, ada contoh-contohnya juga, dll.

§4. If it’s possible, find the structure of the sentence and match it with the whole text.

Satu kalimat biasanya terdiri dari subject, verb, noun, dan kata hubung. Jika kita bisa mengenalinya, lebih mudah dalam menentukan ini teksnya dibawa ke mana sih. Gituu..

Cara lain yang bisa digunakan adalah dengan memahami lawan katanya. Perhatikan contoh di bawah ini. Kata yang digaris bawah adalah kata kerja. Keduanya saling berlawanan makna. Hal ini bisa diketahui dengan adanya kata hubung “but”.

Contoh:

In the 1820's the Southern states supported improvements in the national transportation system, but the Northern states balked.

Terdapat kata but yang mengisyaratkan sebuah kontras dalam kalimat di atas. Disebutkan bahwa the Southern supported improvements. Berarti bisa dipastikan bahwa the Northern tidak menyetujui hal itu. Sehingga, kata balked berarti objected or refused.

Cara terakhir yang bisa kita gunakan untuk mengira-ngira arti suatu kata baru adalah dengan memahami maknanya jika diletakkan di dalam suatu konteks tertentu. Hati-hati, makna satu kata akan bisa berbeda jika diletakkan dalam konteks yang berbeda pula.

​Perhatikan contoh di bawah ini. Arti kata scanty dapat kita duga dengan memperhatikan kata-kata yang digaris bawah, yaitu desert dan incapable of supporting. Kata scanty terletak setelah auxiliary is yang berarti scanty adalah kata sifat atau kata benda.

In a desert, vegetation is so scanty as to be incapable of supporting any large human population.

Seperti yang kita ketahui, jarang ada tanaman di desert, sehingga kata scanty berarti scarce atau barely sufficient.
