Multiplying by Place Value

Remember place values to the left are bigger ...

Each place value to left is ten times greater and each place value to the left is ten times smaller.

Keep in mind that another way to say ten times smaller is 1/10 the size

1/10 can also be written as 0.1

The word "of" means to multiply so when you see 1/10 of 3.56 it means 1/10 x 3.56

1/10 x 3.56 = .356

The Steps to multiplying decimals

Line the numbers up along the right side

Multiply as if there were no decimals

Count the number of digits to the right of the decimal points in the problem

Place a decimal point in your answer so that there are the same number of decimals to the right of the point in your answer as there are in total in the problem.

That's all you have to do.
