Essential Question:

How does the motion of particles differ in a solid, liquid, and gas?

3

What is Matter?

Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space (volume).

Examples: desk, chairs, books, water, air, gatorade, ANYTHING

4

Matter is divided into 4 categories:

media

It depends on the way the particles move

5

Solids

-Any matter that has a definite (rigid) shape and definite volume.

-The particles vibrate next to each other.

-The particles are tightly packed.

Examples: books, chairs, tables

media

6

There are two types of Solids:

1) Crystalline Solid- particles are in regular pattern.

examples: sugar, salt

2)Amorphous Solid-particles are not arranged in a regular pattern.

examples: butter

media

7

 Liquids

-Matter that has a definite volume, but indefinite shape.

-Particles move faster than in solids

Examples: water, gatorade, soda

media

8

Liquids take the shape of whatever container they are in.

media

9

Liquids have two main properties:

Surface tension-holds water together in droplets

Viscosity-the resistance to flow

 Gases

-Matter that has indefinite shape and indefinite volume.

-Particles move very fast

Examples: air, helium, oxygen

Plasma

A gas-like state of matter where atoms have been stripped of electrons.

Examples: fire and lighting

90% of all matter in the universe is plasma
