Learn letter-sounds in French!

Just like in English, letters have a name and one or multiple sounds associated with them. For example, in English, the letter A makes up to 5 different sounds! A as in apple, snake, father, ball and many. Lucky for you, in French, the letter A only makes 1 sound ;)

In the next slide, you will have the option to explore French vowels (voyelles) and consonants (consonnes), and their corresponding sounds (sons). For each, you will also learn vocabulary words that start the letter-sound you are learning and practicing. This will also help you improve your listening skills in French.

Once you are done, complete the assignment "A2. Associer lettres et sons" to prove mastery (80% or more). You can then move on to complex sounds in French such OI, UI and AN. If you're not ready, keep practicing and try again! Should you need more support or guidance, please come see me so we can make a plan together.

3. Same thing, when you are done with les consonnes or if you think you don't need to practice/review them, complete the short formative assessment titled "A2.2 Les consonnes". If you get 80% or more, you can put your knowledge to the test with the summative assessment titled "A2. Associer lettres et sons". When you prove mastery (80% or more) for les voyelles et les consonnes, you can move on to complex sounds in French. Otherwise, keep reviewing and practicing! Should you need more support or guidance, please come see me so we can make a plan together.

Learn complex sounds in French!

Just like in English, letters can be combined to create new sounds. For example, in English, the letters I, G, H and T make the sound -IGHT like in the word light, right, and might. We will call sounds that are made up of multiple letters les sons composés since you will not hear the original letter-sounds, but rather a totally NEW sound!

The French language has many complex sounds, and some will even have different spellings. For example, the sound O, like the letter-sound O in French, can also be spelled AU or EAU. Therefore, there are 3 different ways to spell the sound O in French.

In the next slide, you will have the option to explore different sons composés in French. For each, you will also learn vocabulary words that contain the son composé you are learning and practicing. This will also help you improve your listening skills in French.

Once you are done, complete the assignment "A3. Reconnaître les sons composés" to prove mastery (80% or more). You can then move on to the last step, which is letter patterns and rhyming! If you're not ready, keep practicing and try again! Should you need more support or guidance, please come see me so we can make a plan together.

Notice letter patterns and make rhymes in French!

Just like in English, sometimes, one sound can be spelled in different ways. For example, in English, the sound AI can be spelled -ai like in rain or -ay like in day. Noticing those letter patterns and working on rhyming in French will improve your listening skills, and your ability to select the proper spelling for les sons composés. For example, the sound O, like the letter-sound O in French, can also be spelled AU or EAU. Therefore, there are 3 different ways to spell the sound O in French!

In the next slide, you will have the option to explore different letter patterns (régularité orthographique) in French. For each son composé, you will also learn vocabulary words that contain the various spellings you are learning and practicing. This will also help you improve your listening skills in French by working on rhymes.

Once you are done, complete the FINAL assignment "A4. Associer des rimes" to prove mastery (80% or more). You have then succesfully completed the French letters and sounds challenge and you're ready for your next one! If you're not ready, keep practicing and try again! Should you need more support or guidance, please come see me so we can make a plan together.

3. Same thing, when you are done with les régularités orthographiques or if you think you don't need to practice/review them, complete the short formative assessment titled "A4.2 Les régularités orthographiques".
