DRAW THE MAPS

The map depicts differences between two tunnels built in different times in two cities in Australia.

As can be seen from the map, the given tunnels bear noticeable distinctions in terms of size, traffic capacity and surrounding geology. But most significantly, the second tunnel, which cost twice as much as the first tunnel, could accommodate a higher volume of traffic.

The first tunnel was constructed in a 12 year period from 1986 and required a budget of 550 million dollars. This 1.5 meter high and 2.6 kilometer long underpass can afford four lanes of vehicles at a time. Different from the second tunnel, the first tunnel was beneath a body of water and sand and its shape resembled an arc.

Despite being larger in size, the second tunnel required relatively shorter construction time (2002 to 2006) and a substantially larger investment of over 1 billion dollars. Underneath a highway and a layer of soil and clay, the tunnel stretched for 3.6

kilometers and was 2.5 meter high giving it the ability to accommodate six lanes of vehicles at once.
