Kudzu is thought to be native to most of Asia. This perennial vine terrorizes native plants all over the southeastern United States. It was brought to U.S. in 1876 as an ornamental and later used for erosion control. Kudzu is the host for an insect pest, known as the kudzu bug, and a disease called soybean rust, both of which cause serious damage to legumes such as soybeans, field peas, lima beans and green beans. Kudzu grows rapidly – up to a foot a day!
