Like nonfiction signposts, we can find common events in stories that can help us understand the plot, characters, and theme of a story.
Think of signposts as clues to what the story is trying to tell you.
Plot: The events that make up a story
Theme: The lesson or message of a story
Fiction Signposts
6
Similar to the nonfiction signpost, C&C focuses on a difference in a character's behavior or motivation.
This will give us clues about the conflict or characters.
Contrast and Contradictions
When a character gets advice from someone. this can help resolve the conflict.
Oftentimes, the advice can relate to the theme of the story.
Words of the wiser
"Ah-ha" is usually what people say when they have an idea or figure something out.
The realizations characters have can also help resolve the conflict or relate to the theme.
Ah-Ha Moment
7
This is when something happens over and over again OR a symbol or item appears over and over again.
Again & Again can give clues about symbols and themes.
Again and Again
Like the name suggests, this is when a character has a tough time answer a question or making a decision.
This usually relates to the conflict.
Tough Questions
Many fiction stories will have flashbacks, or have characters remember the past.
This helps us learn about characters and why they may act the way they do.
