The Future of Learning Design

2

Business Value

How learning design will work and what it looks like in the next ten years?

Trends in instructional design are diverse, making them suitable for a range of learning environments and modalities. Mobile learning is likely to become more common in the context of online education. Mobile devices will offer more educational options during the next ten years. The transition from tutoring to open learning design will likely receive the most attention in the adult education setting (Paquette, 2014). This trend is explained by the fact that in adult education, opportunities for new knowledge and experiences are typically valued more highly than tutoring. Interactions and problem-solving situations will be provided by an open learning approach.

User Experiences

How will users experience learning design in the future?

One of the future trends in design will be the use of motion to depict or tell a story for the learner. Motion guides the user to a sequence of actions necessary to perform a task. Motion drives the user experience and acknowledges the actions the user has performed by providing feedback. Motion can elicit emotions for the user. Finally, the integration of motion can make the user experience seem light, seamless and smooth.

Impact of Learning Design

How will the future of learning design impact institutions and their products?

Courses' subject matter will change significantly over time. It is likely that student demand will have an impact on course content. The courses that students choose will depend on their needs as consumers of education services. The state of the labor market is another element that may strongly affect the content. The direction and content of the preparation can be determined by the necessity for expertise.

Learning

How can we use technology to thwart learning in the future?

Schools must provide access and incorporate technology into every aspect of the educational process for the nation to maintain our global competitiveness and produce engaged citizens. Hybrid learning cannot simply take place as a result of a worldwide pandemic, it must be common practice. Learning designers must incorporate multimedia communication, gamification, and mobile device interaction into traditional academic courses' instruction and infuse critical thinking, complex problem solving, cooperation, and teamwork. The chance to build a sense of community in learning and the conviction that learners can succeed in school should also be provided. Beyond the fundamental core academic skills, a growing body of research is highlighting that learners need to develop non-cognitive tasks like making connections and resoving social issues.

Dependencies

What does learning design depend on to be successful in the future?

First and most important, learning designers must adapt to the climate surrounding them. We must be cognizant of the learners whom we design for. Although the majority of people now own some sort of mobile computing device like a Smartphone or tablet, integrating the affordances of these technologies within classroom communities can be a starting point to ensuring that learning aligns closely with how the technologies are being used by students (i.e Snapchat, Instagram, Gamification)

Signals

How do we know changes in learning design are needed for the future?

In the most recent UTS Learning Design Meetup, Julien Depauw noted that the learning designer of the future needs to be flexible and responsive to the shifting needs of industries and learners. By some estimates, the pandemic pushed up the evolution of hybrid learning integration and technology forward 5 to 7 years. The current context demands that, in addition to the push for lifelong learning and working from global locations, designers must discover ways to personalize learning for every user.
