The Two General Types of Energy;

Kinetic Energy is energy that is based on its motion.

Kinetic Energy

Potential Energy is energy that relies on it's relative position.

3

Energy Transfer and Transformation;

©WiktoriaZimoch

Energy transformations are processes that convert energy from one type to another.

Energy Transformation

The conversion of one form of energy into another, or the movement of energy from one place to another.

Joules is the term for the SI unit of work or energy, equal to the work done by a force of one newton when its point of application moves one meter in the direction of action of the force, equivalent to one 3600th of a watt-hour.

What is Joules?

5

Gravitational Potential Energy

Gravitational Potential Energy is the energy an object possesses because of its position in a gravitational field.

In simple terms, Gravitational Energy is also an energy that is related to gravitational force or gravity.

Thermal Energy and a System

Thermal energy is related to systems because of the source and purpose of the system. For example, a kettle on the stove is a system that has Thermal Energy meaning that the water will boil because of the heat.

A group of related elements that function together as a whole to produce a certain outcome.

System

Thermal energy is the energy contained within a system and releases heat and temperature-related energy.

The bar graphs above model the amount of KE (kinetic energy) and PE (potential energy) in the model on the left. As you can see, the amount of PE decreased in the graphs as the KE increased and then evened out with the amount of PE. This happened because the height of the roller coaster causes the kinetic energy levels to rise (my graph is based on the roller coaster starting at the top and ending at the bottom, so the charts look different).
