  • An intellectual disability (ID) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that causes severe limitations in cognitive functioning and adaptive skills necessary for day-to-day living such as communication, social, and self-care skills.

    • ID causes below-average intelligence and a lack of skills necessary for daily living.

    •  Children with intellectual disabilities can and do learn new skills, but they learn them more slowly.
