The Tainos lived in a patriarchal society. This meant that they lived in a society ruled by men. The leader was known as a 'Cacique'.

The position of Cacique was a hereditary position, meaning this position was passed down from generation to generation within the family from father to son. The Caciques practiced 'Polgamy" to ensure having a son to inherit the position. Polgamy means that they had multiple wives.

Even the society was Patriarchal, there was a female leader, Aracoana

Political Life of the Kalinagos

The Kalinagos lived a patriarchal society. The leader of the Kalinagos was called an Ubutu/ Ouboutou.

Unlike the Tainos, the place of Ubutu was not hereditary but had to be worked for. The Ubutu was selected by elders based on: skills, bravery, ability to withstand pain and sometimes if they killed many persons in battle.

The Ubutu couldn't be a slave or prisoner of war.
