Grace Hopper (born 1906, New York City—died 1992, Arlington, Virginia) was a mathematician who, while working with the world’s first digital computer in the 1940s, developed the concept of automatic programming with a compiling system using words instead of mathematical symbols. From this concept she helped develop the computer language called COBOL (Common Business Oriented Languages), used today in data processing.
