Chapters 7-8
In Chapter 7, our characters arrive at Uncle Henrik’s house. We learn that he is a
fisherman that has a special job in the Danish Resistance.
When they arrive, Mama tells Annemarie and Ellen not to speak to anyone. She
worries that they won’t be able to explain who Ellen is to other people in
Gilleleje.
Uncle Henrik informs Annemarie that there has been a death in the family
(Great Aunt Birte). Annemarie is suspicious and thinks Mama and Uncle Henrik
are lying to her because she has never heard the name ever brought up.

Chapters 9-10
In Chapter 9, Uncle Henrik admits to Annemarie that he did lie. He lied because
he was trying to protect Annemarie because, “It is easier to be brave if you do
not know everything.”
Peter shows up with Ellen’s parents reuniting their family together.
The family is having a night of mourning for Great Aunt Birte, when Nazi
soldiers show up to investigate why there are so many people arriving at the
house so late at night.
The soldiers want to open the casket, but Mama tells them that she died of
typhus so they would not want to open it.
After the soldiers leave Peter reads a psalm from the Bible. This is where the
novel gets its name from.

In Chapter 11, Peter preps everyone to go to Uncle Henrik’s boat. From there, Uncle Henrik
will be taking them to Sweden where they will be safe.
Peter gives the woman’s baby a mysterious liquid to make her sleep. This way the baby
will not cry out on their journey.
As Peter leads the Rosens out, Mr. Rosen trips on the loose step outside. Annemarie and
Ellen say their heartfelt goodbyes promising to see each other again someday when it is
safe.
Mama leads the next group out while Annemarie is left to wait with Kirsti at the house.
Annemarie shares her thoughts with the reader about how it is harder for those who must
