SWBAT: I can explain the law of
conservation of energy.

Vocabulary

Chemical energy: energy stored in the bonds of
chemical substances

Radiant energy: light energy

8.P.2 Explain the environmental implications associated with the various methods of obtaining, managing and using
energy resources.

8.P.2.1 Explain the environmental consequences of the various methods of obtaining, transforming, and distributing
energy.

8.P.2.2 Explain the implications of the depletion of renewable and nonrenewable energy resources and the
importance of conservation.

CONSERVATION OF ENERGY:

ENERGY CAN NEITHER BE CREATED

NOR DESTROYED; BUT, IT MAY BE

TRANSFORMED

7

media

An energy transformation is the change
of energy from one form to another.
Chemical: energy is stored in the bonds of a
chemical substance
Energy is released when the bonds are
broken

Glucose, fossil fuels, burning wood!

Mechanical

Kinetic: energy due to an object in motion

Potential: the energy held by an object
because of its position relative to other
objects

Thermal: heat energy - sometimes the result
of inefficient energy transformations

Electrical: the power an atom's charged
particles have to cause an action or move an
object

Radiant: light energy (can be UV radiation
or solar energy)

Multiple Choice

Energy transformations occur when...
1

energy is created through conduction

2

energy changes from one form to another

3

two forces slide together that are touching

4

Types of energy sources used

to produce Electrical Energy

Solar

Nuclear

Wind

Hydroelectric

Geothermal

Tidal

Biomass

Fossil fuels

Types of energy sources used

Nuclear

Wind

Hydroelectric

Geothermal

Tidal

Biomass

Fossil fuels

Each of these
energy sources is
used to generate
mechanical
energy which
then spins a
turbine.

That mechanical
energy is then
transformed into
electrical energy
by a generator!

Turbine: a device that harnesses the
kinetic energy of some fluid (water,
steam, air) and turns this into the
rotational motion of the device itself.

  1. You may work independently or together and may switch rooms.

  1. Failure to work effectively and be appropriate will result in your removal

from a group breakout room for the rest of the semester and parent

contact.

  1. Go to Lesson 6.2 to get the link for the Formative - there is a how to video

within the assignment to help you out!

  1. Go to Formative to access the PhET: Energy Forms and Changes Virtual Lab

  1. Follow the directions to complete the assignment!
