Metropolitan Areas
New York and Chicago are two of the largest metropolitan areas east of the Mississippi River. New York City, located on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Hudson River, is the most populous city in the United States. This famously diverse city is home to more than 9 million people, making it one of the most heavily populated cities in the world. New York began as a Dutch colonial port city called New Amsterdam. Although it is better known today as a hub of culture and commerce, New York is still home to one of the busiest ports in North America.
New York City is a dense cluster of urban areas, called boroughs, connected by streets, bridges, trains, and water passages. The five boroughs that make up the city are Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Though it is the smallest of the five boroughs, covering an area of only 22.6 square miles (58.5 sq. km), the island of Manhattan is the cultural, political, and economic center of New York City.
