The Benefits of Technology for Students

Sitting in a classroom while trying to learn from mountains of texts on paper can be challenging. Technology is able to add variation to a boring class. Not only can the use of technology bring a better environment for learning, but it can also make connecting with others and the outside world easier. Technology allows students to better their education and connect with other people.

Technology Can Aid a Student’s Learning

A study conducted by Hartnell-Young and his colleagues, tracking 331 students in multiple schools, found that teens felt considerably more motivated when technology was used as a learning tool than without. They were allowed to use cell phones in class to help with homework, record lessons, access the internet, and more (Docksai 10).

Phones allow students to communicate through text and call with others. Many of the teens reported feeling “lost without [their] phone” and without it, it‘s “like leaving the house naked” (“Teens Text”). Many of the students also get class-related and world news on the internet from their phones.

Some people argue that news and information spread on the internet is not credible and there aren’t ways to judge how truthful things are (Gurak 5). While there are a few sources with non-credible knowledge, several others are. Knowing what to look for when searching for good sources can be difficult, but there are many things that can help. For example, filtering programs have become popular as they are able to scan through sources to determine credibility (“Tips for…”).
