Why computers use binary

How to count in binary

What the names of binary units are

By Mr. Dwedari

7

Why Binary?

  • Computers are made up of switches. They are either on (1) or off (0).

  • Computers therefore cannot physically represent any more than 2 digits (0 and 1)- like we can’t represent more than 10 values on our hands!

  • So any type of data that the computer deals with HAS to be converted into a binary number for the computer to process it.

8

Multiple Choice

Binary is a number system of 2 digits (1 and 0) used by computers to represent different types of data.

Computers use switches powered by electricity. They count using binary number system 0 / 1(base 2)

Humans have 10 fingers. We count using denary number system 0-9 (base 10)

We count 0, then 1… Then we record we have gotten to 2 by placing a 1 in the 2s column and going back to 0 in the ones. When we get to 2 sets of 2s, we make a record of it by placing a 1 in the 4s column…and so on!

We count to 9…Then we record we have gotten to 10 by placing a 1 in the 10s column and going back to 0 in the ones.

When we get to 100, we make a record of it by placing a 1 in the 100s column…and so on!

Binary Units

Some text here about the topic of discussion

In the binary system:

  • we have special names that we give binary numbers of different length.

  • The basic unit is 0 or 1

By Mr. Dwedari

This is a binary digit….also known as a bit

A bit, can store one of 2 numbers (0 or 1)

Just like the traditional number system, binary also uses the word kilo to represent 1000 (e.g. kilogram = 1000grams)

1 kilobyte (KB) = 1000 bytes
