Archduke Ferdinand was next in line to rule Austria-Hungary. He was to speak in Bosnia at an event when there was an assassination attempt made on him from a bomb thrown at his car. After the dinner and speech, they wanted to visit those injured by the bomb, and another attempt was made on his life and his wife. This time, it was successful. Gavril Princip of the Black Hand had assassinated the Archduke. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was a spark that brought about the war when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia.
