What are pronouns?

Pronouns are words used to replace nouns.

Words like I, You, He, She, We, etc. are pronouns.

We - Wir

Wir sind Mädchen.

We are girls.

Plural

I - Ich

Ich komme aus Berlin.

I am from Berlin.

Singular

First person

You - Sie

Wie heißen Sie?

What's your name?

Singular (Formal)

You - Du

Wann hast du Geburtstag?

When is your birthday?

Singular (Informal)

Second Person

You - Sie

Sind Sie Ärzte?

Are you doctors?

Plural (formal)

You - Ihr

Ihr seid nicht erlaubt!

You are not allowed!

Note: The S in "Sie" is always caoitalized.

She - Sie

Sie trainiert im Fitnessstudio.

She trains in the gym.

Feminine

He - Er

Er ist stark.

He is strong.

Third person

Note: Use these pronouns even when the object is inanimate but has a gender. Example: Er ist ein Tisch (It is a table)

They - Sie

Sie gehen ins Büro.

They are going to the office.

Es ist sehr cool.

It is very cool.

Sein

Sein is a verb that means "to be". In english you would conjugate it as I am, You are, He is, We are, etc. In this lesson I will show you how to conjugate them in German.

Ich bin Karl.

We are - Wir sind

Wir sind Polizisten.

Du und Sie

You are - Du bist (informal)

Du bist meine Schwester.

You are - Sie sind (formal)

Sie sind Herr James

Ihr und Sie

You are - Ihr seid (informal)

Ihr seid Jungen.

You are - Sie sind (formal)

Sie sind Krankenschwestern.

Er und Sie

He is - Er ist

Er ist mein Freund.

She is - Sie ist

Sie ist meine Freundin.

Es und Sie

It is - Es ist

Es ist klein.

They are - Sie sind

Sie sind nervös.
