Definition:

Isolating the Variable: To isolate the variable you will cancel out terms using opposite operations. This is what people mean when they say "solve for x".

Opposite Operations: Opposite operations are used to cancel out terms so that we can isolate the variable. The opposite of adding is subtracting and the opposite of multiplication is division.
Properties of Equality: When working with equations, whatever you do on one side of the equation you must do the exact same on the other side.
