Cien or ciento?

• Use "cien" for 100.

  • Tengo cien DVDs.

• Use "ciento" for 101-199.

  • Tengo ciento veinte CDs.

• Unlike English, there is no "y (and)" in between "ciento" and your tens/ones.

  • 130 = ciento treinta (not ciento Y treinta)

  • 134 = ciento treinta y cuatro (not ciento Y treinta y cuatro)

200-999

• Use the numbers you learned in your vocab and tack numbers 1-99 to the end.

  • 300 = trescientos

  • 325 = trescientos veinticinco

  • 364 = trescientos sesenta y cuatro

• These numbers have masculine and feminine forms that agree with the noun they describe (IF they are being used as an adjective).

  • Hay quinientos libros en la biblioteca.

  • Hay quinientas sillas en la biblioteca.

• Mil only has one form.

• Numbers beginning with mil are written with a period in Spanish instead of a comma.

  • 3.000 = tres mil

  • 106.500 = ciento seis mil qunientos

  • 999.999 = novecientos noventa y nueve mil, novecientos noventa y nueve

• Years may be written in Spanish with or without a period. When it is spoken, it is read like any other 4 digit number, NOT grouped 2 numbers at a time like English.

  • 2022 = dos mil veintidós

  • 1492 = mil cuatrocientos noventa y dos

• 1.000.000 = un millón

  • 1.200.000 = un millón doscientos mil

  • 2.000.000 = dos millones

  • 3.000.000 = tres millones

  • etc.

• With nouns

  • Millions of books = millones de libros
