Cien or ciento?

  • Use "cien" for 100.

    • Tengo cien DVDs.

  • Use "ciento" for 101-199.

    • Tengo ciento veinte CDs.

  • Unlike English, there is no "y (and)" in between "ciento" and your tens/ones.

    • 130 = ciento treinta (not ciento Y treinta)

    • 134 = ciento treinta y cuatro (not ciento Y treinta y cuatro)

    • 300 = trescientos

  • Years may be written in Spanish with or without a period. When it is spoken, it is read like any other 4 digit number, NOT grouped 2 numbers at a time like English.

    • 2022 = dos mil veintidós
