Helping Verbs

There are 22 (sometimes people say 23).

These verbs HELP a main verb in the sentence.

They are: be, am, is, are, was, were, been, have, has, had, should, would, could,
shall, will, might, must, may, can, do, did, does, (and some say being)

Helping Verbs

Wait...can’t some of these verbs be linking verbs?

Yes, they can. However, if they are used alone, they are linking verbs.

If there is another verb after it-- then it means that it is a helping verb.

Helping Verb Math

Helping Verb(s) + Main Verb (action or linking) = Verb Phrase

When this happens, it is easy to look at the first verb and decide that it’s a helping
verb, but that’s not what we need to do. To find it a verb is action or linking, you
MUST find the LAST verb in the verb phrase. Decide if that one verb is action or
linking.

Examples:

Must be running

has been

This verb is
linking. So

the verb
phrase is
linking.

This verb is
action. So
the verb
phrase is

action.

Some of those verbs sound like action verbs…. How
do I tell the difference?

Mrs. Doenges’ super special hint-- READY????

If you can replace the verb (or even verb phrase) with one of these options:

IS or AM or ARE

Then the verb (or verb phrase) is a linking verb.

Linking verb song here

Next page has my example….

27

media
media

Mrs. D’s example

People felt excited about the possibility of space travel.

Step 1: Find the verb

FELT

Step 2: Action or Linking? Can I replace it with one of the words (am, is, or are)?

People ARE excited about the possibility of space travel.

Step 3: Does that sentence mean the same thing?

YES!

Answer: Felt is being used as a linking verb in this sentence.

Why did she
say “in this
sentence”?

28

media
media

Another example...

Mrs. Doenges tasted an apple.

Step 1: Find the verb

TASTED

Step 2: Action or linking? Can it be replaced?Mrs. D is an apple?

Step 3: Does that sentence mean the same thing?

NO.

Tasted is an action verb in this sentence.

I wonder why
Mrs. Doenges

said “in this

sentence” again.

29

media
media

Here’s why...

Some words can be both an action or linking verb… it depends on the sentence.
YOU MUST READ THE SENTENCE TO FIND OUT!

Example:

Strawberries TASTE sweet.

Mrs. Doenges tasted the sweet strawberries.

Strawberries don’t have tongues.
They can’t taste. NOT an action.

Mrs. D does have a tongue. She
can taste. IS an action.
