Ch. 9 Setting, Plot, & Theme
Setting: Vacant Lot, Hospital, Night
Plot:
*Pony feels out of place with the “hoods” who are fighting with them.
*The Greasers win the Rumble.
*Johnny dies, & Dall runs out devastated.
Theme:
“There isn’t any real good reason for fighting except self-defense.”
(Ponyboy, p. 137)
*¨I´d hate to see the day when I have to get my nerve from a can.”

*Pony asks why gang likes to fight (Steve for hatred; Soda for fun,
likes fighting, action; Two-Bit for conformity; Darry likes anything that
takes strength, pride)
*Soda cheats at cards…& other things (inference)
*Pony doesn’t drink because he’s seen what happens at Johnny’s
and realizes the only reason to fight is self-defense.
*Difference between Shephard’s gang & Pony’s = leader &
organized vs. friends. Shephard’s gang uses weapons & whatever
they can find in a rumble; Pony’s doesn’t. Only 1 of Pony’s gang to
really hurt anyone was Johnny, & he hadn’t wanted to.
*Darry/Paul start rumble ~ used to be friends
*Darry is ashamed to be with the Brumly boys * Shepard’s gang,
but only Pony & Soda realize it.

*Dally shows up, Greasers win, Pony & Dally go to see Johnny
*Dally says to get “Tough like me & you don’t get hurt.”
*Cops pull them over, Pony fakes sick, Dally pulls knife on dr. to see
Johnny, Dr. Lets him, but says not because of knife.
*Johnny says fighting's no good. Tells Pony, ¨Stay Gold,¨ & dies. Dally
runs off, cussing.

*Pony convinces himself that Johnny isn´t dead as he’s leaving the
hospital after watching him die.
*Pony gets ride home, tells everyone Johnny died & Dally ran off.
*Dally calls for help, Gang goes to vacant lot & cops kill Dally who
had UNLOADED gun (suicide). Dally loved Johnny like a little
brother,, and Johnny was gone.
*Johnny dies a hero; Dally dies a hoodlum, but gallant.
*Pony remembers Southern Gentlemen riding off into sure death:
southern gentlemen with big black eyes in blue jeans & t-shirts
(Johnny), southern gentlemen crumbling under street lights (Dally).
*Pony is sick for days.
