RULE #1:

A single subject takes a single verb.

Tip:

The single subject has "no s" on the end.

The single verb has an "s" on the end.

Examples:

  1. She walks to the store.

  2. He attends Titchfield High School.

  3. John has a speaking disability.

  4. Sarah goes to the store everyday.

  5. It loves to eat tuna.

  6. The cat lives in the hut.

  7. The child understands his work.

  8. My brother visits my school everyday.

  9. It is running from the dog.

  10. The mother provides lunch.

RULE #2:

A plural subject takes a plural verb.

Tip:

The plural subject has an "s" on the end.

The plural verb has "no s" on the end.

Examples:

  1. The sisters walk to the store.

  2. They attend Titchfield High School.

  3. The brothers have a speaking disability.

  4. The women go to the store everyday.

  5. The cats love to eat tuna.

  6. They live in the hut.

  7. The students understand their work.

  8. My brothers visit my school everyday.

  9. The girls are running from the dog.

  10. The parents provide lunch.

RULE #3:

Though "I" and "you" are single, they take plural verbs.

Examples:

  1. I walk to the store.

  2. You attend Titchfield High School.

  3. I attend Titchfield High School.

  4. I have a speaking disability.

  5. You have many books.

  6. You go to the store everyday.

  7. I love to eat tuna.

  8. You love fruits.

  9. You are in the hut.

    EXCEPTION: You do NOT say "I are" it is "I am".

  10. I understand your challenges.

RULE #4:

Two single subjects joined by "and" become plural.

Tip:

This is called a compound subject NOT a compound sentence.

Examples:

  1. My sister and Shawna walk to the store.

  2. Sean and John attend Titchfield High School.

  3. Billy and Tom have a speaking disability.

  4. The women go to the store everyday.

  5. My cat and your dog love to eat tuna.

  6. The book, television and remote are in the hut.

  7. The mother and the grandmother understand.

  8. Dad, grandma and grandpa love fruits.
