What we will learn today:

What is respiratory system

Organs involved in respiration and their function

How gases are exchanged during breathing

3

Activity # 1

Let's play a game

4

Respiratory System

  • Group of tissues and organs that allows you to breathe.

  • The organs that help to get oxygen from air to your blood and get rid of carbon dioxide, makeup the respiratory system.

5

Larynx/ Voice box

  • Your larynx is a hollow tube that connects your throat (pharynx) to the rest of your respiratory system.

  • It helps you swallow safely and contains the vocal cords, so it's often called the voice box

6

Trachea

Wind pipe

Extends from Larynx to the middle of thoracic cavity where it divides into bronchi

7

Bronchus

  • plural: bronchi

  • Formed by division of trachea.

  • Subdivide into smaller and smaller branches, bronchioles

8

Alveoli

  • Alveolus – individual sac

  • Bunches of tiny air sacs inside the lungs.

  • When you breath in, they fill with air.

  • Very thin walls which permit the exchange of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide)

  • Exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood stream.

Lungs

  • Soft spongy elastic organs with smooth shiny surface.

  • Consists of bronchioles, alveoli and an extensive network of blood vessels and the capillaries.

Diaphragm

The diaphragm, located below the lungs, is the major muscle of respiration.

It is a large, dome-shaped muscle that contracts rhythmically and continually, and most of the time, involuntarily.

Works with lungs to inhale and exhale air.
