Parts of Speech

There are eight parts of speech in the English language: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection. The part of speech indicates how the word functions in meaning as well as grammatically within the sentence.

Let's think about nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions.

2

NOUN - person, place, thing, or idea

Here are some examples:

  • dog, cat, book, banana

  • Japan, Italy, Ota City

Verb - an action word or a being word.

  • if you are doing an action, that action word is a verb

  • if you are just being something, the word being is a verb

  • if you know the subject noun (or pronoun), ask yourself, what is the subject doing? Maybe it´s an action, maybe it´s being, but that´s the verb

Try to check all prepositions. A trick to use to find a preposition would be to try to put it with a noun like wall, (from the previous "anywhere a mouse can go" example) or a room the kitchen.

Keep in mind those specific examples might not work with EVERY preposition, like "with," or "for," for example.
