Prokaryotes

  • Prokaryotic means " before nucleus" in Greek.

  • Do NOT have a nucleus.

  • Circular DNA that floats freely in the cell.

  • No membrane bound organelles.

  • Typically smaller than eukaryotic cells.

  • Unicellular, meaning one cell.

  • Aerobic or anaerobic, meaning some can live without oxygen.

Eukaryotes

  • Eukaryotic means " true nucleus" in Greek.

  • Have a nucleus.

  • Have membrane bound organelles.

  • Typically much larger than prokaryotic cells.

  • Multicellular, meaning more than one cell,

    but can be unicellular.

  • Aerobic meaning most need oxygen to survive.
