Definition of Networks

A group of Devices connected to one another is defined

as a ‘network’.

Eg: television network, water network, phone network etc.
The creation of a network of devices is termed as

‘networking’. Networking is a very useful concept as it
helps us exchange information.

4

media

Computer Network

A computer network consists of more than two computers

connected to each other through cables, radio waves or satellites.

The primary purpose of a computer network is to share

resources and communicate.

5

media

Computer Network

Is a collection of not just computers alone but also

peripheral devices.

Peripheral devices are those devices which have the

capacity to connect to the computer system abd
additional functionality to the network.

Eg of peripheral devices : printers, scanners, keyboard,

mouse etc.

6

Components of a Network

Sender

• It sends the

data
message

Receiver

• It receives

the message

Medium

• It is a

physical
medium
through
which a
message
travels from
sender to
the receiver.

Types of Networks

Local Area Network

In LAN, two or more computers and peripheral devices

are connected within a small area such as a building, school

lab or a small office.

8

media

Types of Networks

Metropolitan Area Network

MAN is a computer network that is larger than
LAN. It can cover an entire city or even a large
campus connecting computers across buildings far
from each other.

9

media

Types of Networks

Wide Area Network

A large computer network that connects two or more
computers or LANs spread across cities. They are
connected using either optical fibre cables, or satellite
radio links or microwave radio links.

10

media

Types of Networks

Personal Area Network
A personal area network (PAN) is a computer
network organised around an individual person, and
is set up for personal use only. It typically involves
computers, phones, printers, tablets, etc.

11

Types of Networks

Controller Area Network

It is a two way high speed network technology
of microcontrollers that connects devices, sensors and
actuators in a system for real time control applications.

Networking Devices and Terminologies

Modem

It is an electronic device that allows a

computer to transmit data over telephone

or cable lines.

18

media

Networking Devices and Terminologies

Router

It is a hardware device that

connects two different networks.

19

media

Networking Devices and Terminologies

Gateway

It is used to connect multiple
networks of different types.

Hub/Switch

A hub is device that acts as a common connection point for a
number of computers in a LAN. A switch functions like a hub
but it is smarter. When it receives a message, it checks who it is

meant for and sends it to only that specific computer.

21

media

Networking Devices and Terminologies

Internet Service Provider

It is an organisation that provide
an internet connection to users.

22

Bandwidth

Bandwidth is a measurement of the data
that can be transmitted in fixed amount of
time over a wired or wireless connection.

23

media

World Wide Web

Webpage

• It is a digital page which may contain

text, hyperlink, videos, audios, images,
tables, etc.

Website

• It is a collection of related web pages

containing images, videos or other
digital media and set under the same
domain name.

24

media

World Wide Web

Web Portal

• It is a web page which contains

link to other websites.

25

media

World Wide Web

IP Address

• It is a unique numeric label provided to each

computer in a computer network that uses the
IP for communication.

• Example – 205.198.0.1, 209.191.88.254

DNS

• It is a unique web address given to each

website.

26

Hyperlink

  • Most often called a link is a reference to data a reader can access by clicking on it.

  • It could point to text, data or a whole new document.

  • The text that actually acts as a clickable link is called anchor text.

Some text here about the topic of discussion

27

Hypertext

  • The term was coined by Ted Nelson in the year 1965.

  • Hypermedia is also a term that is used for hypertext which needn't be just text.

  • It could be graphic images, sounds or video.
