TEKS 8.6 A: NET FORCE

Balanced and Unbalanced Forces

2

media

What is a force?

A force is a push or pull that causes an object
to move, stop, or change direction

In physics a force is anything that makes an
object accelerate

media

3

media

Force

Forces come in pairs

Forces have a magnitude and a

direction

1 N (Newton) = 1 kg * m/s/s

5N, north (up)
Magnitude: 5N
Direction: north (up)

4

media

NET FORCE

Net Force is the combination of

all the forces on an object.

The Net Force is ZERO if forces on an

object are equal and in opposite
direction.

Net FORCE is NOT ZERO if forces are

not equal.

media

5

media

Balanced and Unbalanced Forces

Forces occur in pairs and they

can be either balanced or
unbalanced

media

6

media

Balanced Forces

Balanced forces do not cause change

in motion. They are equal in size and
opposite in direction

media

7

media

Unbalanced Forces

An unbalanced force always causes a

change in motion (speed, direction, or
both). Objects move where the greater
force is.

When unbalanced forces act in opposite

directions you can find the net force

Net force

Magnitude

The difference between the two forces

Direction

Direction of the largest force

How do UNBALANCED FORCES affect motion VIDEO

To calculate the Net
force you MUST:
>SUBTRACT: Forces
that go the opposite
direction.
>ADD Forces that go
the same direction.

Unbalanced Forces

3 N, right – 6 N, left = 3N, left

Unbalanced Forces
Calculating Net Force

4 N, left – 10 N, right = ????

What is the NET FORCE and in What Direction?

How Do You
Determine Net
Force?:

>SUBTRACT:
Forces that go the
opposite direction.
>ADD Forces that go
the same direction.

10

media

Unbalanced Forces

4 N, left – 10 N, right = 6N, right

To calculate the Net
force you MUST:
>SUBTRACT: Forces
that go the opposite
direction.
>ADD Forces that go
the same direction.

11

media

Unbalanced Forces

5 N, right + 10 N, right = ???

What is the NET FORCE and in What Direction?

To calculate the Net
force you MUST:
>SUBTRACT: Forces
that go the opposite
direction.
>ADD Forces that go
the same direction.

12

media

Unbalanced Forces

5 N, right + 10 N, right = 15N, right

To calculate the Net
force you MUST:
>SUBTRACT: Forces
that go the opposite
direction.
>ADD Forces that go
the same direction.
