About Themes

A literary theme is the main idea or underlying meaning a writer explores in a novel, short story, or other literary work. Every literary work tends to have a theme, or an underlying message that the reader can learn. For example, in the story of The Boy Who Cried Wolf, the main character tends to trick people around him so often that when he actually finds himself in trouble, nobody will believe that he is actually in danger, and that it is just another silly trick. This message implies that using deception as a constant form of trickery is not a good idea. People around you may have trouble finding the truth when you are telling it.
