The Steps
2
What is the scientific method?
Scientific Method is a series of steps that are
used to investigate a natural occurrence.
3
Step One
1. Problem/Question: Develop a question or
problem that can be solved through
experiments. It has to be testable!
4
Step Two
2. Research: Research what is already known
about your question. Learn from others who may
have already completed experiments. Your
question could already be answered! You
should also make observations of your topic of
interest.
5
Step Three
3. Develop a hypothesis: Make an educated
guess about the problem or question.
In the form of “If…then…”
If I study longer for my science test, then I will
have a better score.
6
Step Four
4. Experiment: Develop and follow a procedure.
A procedure is set way of doing something.
Include a detailed materials list.
The experiment should be able to be repeated
by others. This has to be measurable!
7
Step Five
5. Collect and Analyze Results: Organize
and analyze data. Do not try to make the
data fit your hypothesis! Include graphs,
pictures and tables.
8
Step Six
6. Conclusion: Include a statement that
accepts or rejects the hypothesis.
● Make recommendations for further study
and possible improvements to the
procedure if your hypothesis was
incorrect.
9
Step Seven
7. Report: You now have information to share,
regardless if your hypothesis was right or
wrong. This could be through a professional
report, a science fair or an article that is
published in a scientific journal.
